The GoPro Cam mounted on Michael Schumacher's helmet when he crashed and slammed his head into a rock while skiing in the French Alps in December is reportedly what caused the seven-time world champion's brain injury. Following Schumacher's skiing accident, the Formula One driver has been left in a medically-induced coma for nearly six months.

Doctors have previously said that Schumacher would not have survived the accident if it weren't for the helmet that he was wearing. However, French commentator Jean-Louis Moncet said that what worsened Schumacher's condition wasn't really the crash, but the GoPro camera attached to his helmet.

Think this has a lot to do with decision. But if cops can wear them in some States then a decision needs to be made which is consistent with all of Australia

Cameras on helmets and Gizmodo article

    David,

Me thinks young Hayley Williams should do some fact checking first.

Yes in Victoria old mate lost his court case and I am of the understanding that is going to be appealed. Guy can confirm that one.

As for NSW, a recent case was dropped by the NSW Police at the last minute as it appears they cannot prove the case.

BNSW CRS for road safety have carried out testing on helmets fitted with cameras and the results might surprise a lot of people.

    Of the 9 units submitted to three tests;

    Whiplash test all passed.

Drop test onto cameras, all passed.

    Oblique angle test 4 failures.

The oblique angle impact test was using an outdated British Standard test referenced in AS/NZS1698:2006.

Now that ECE 22.05 is legal in NSW it references a newer version of the oblique angle impact test and it is highly likely that all of the units that failed will now pass.

As for Shumacher and the cracked helmet?

According to Die Welt, the crack in his lid was down the right hand side of the helmet.

The Go-Pro was mounted in the top centre and didn’t have a scratch on it and it is believed that the camera had nothing to do with the head injury.

This is evidenced by the fact that no claim has been made by the insurance company against Go-Pro.

Schumacher’s helmet was not manufactured to any standard, there is no Euro standard for ski/Snow board helmets.

Unfortunately the footage has not been released and may never see the light of day.

As for NSW, no one has been nicked for a camera on their helmet since the chap up at Kempsey and that charge was withdrawn.

My suggestion is do your own risk evaluation on mounting one on your lid, if you think it is too dangerous in the event of a fall then don’t mount it there.

If you think you won’t fall and are going to manage the risk then make your own decision.

The jury is still out as to whether or not they are legal or illegal but you can take a hint from the NSW Police motorcycle riders using them.

    FYI
